Caring for your child when anxiety or medical needs make the dentist visit hard
Dental appointments can feel overwhelming for some children, whether due to fear, sensory sensitivities, or complex medical or developmental needs. At RVA Children's Dentistry, we prioritize a nurturing, unhurried approach that helps children feel safe while we also addressing their oral health. When routine comfort techniques are not enough, pediatric sedation dentistry becomes a compassionate option to complete necessary care while keeping your child comfortable and protected.
What is pediatric sedation dentistry?
Pediatric sedation dentistry refers to a range of techniques used to help young patients relax, remain calm, and tolerate dental procedures that would otherwise be difficult for them. Sedation can be as mild as nitrous oxide, which provides a calming, quickly reversible effect, or it can be deeper using oral medications under close monitoring. In cases where a child has significant medical conditions, extreme dental anxiety, or requires many procedures at once, dental care delivered under general anesthesia in a hospital setting may be recommended. The level of sedation is chosen to match the child's needs, with safety and comfort as the guiding priorities.
Benefits of pediatric sedation dentistry
When selected thoughtfully and administered by experienced pediatric dental professionals, sedation can reduce stress for both the child and the family, allow completion of restorative care in fewer visits, and protect the child's emotional experience with dental care. For children with sensory processing differences or developmental disabilities, sedation may be the only humane way to deliver necessary treatment while avoiding prolonged distress. Sedation also supports high-quality clinical outcomes by minimizing movement which allows our precise procedures to be performed well. Throughout, our focus remains on compassionate management and patient safety; sedation is offered only when it is the safest and most appropriate choice for the child.
What to expect during your visit
Our goal is to make the process predictable and reassuring. Before any sedation appointment, you will meet with one of our pediatric dentists to review medical history, medications, and relevant health details. We will explain which sedation method is recommended and why, including the expected effects and any pre-visit instructions such as fasting times. On the day of treatment, a licensed clinical team member will monitor your child's breathing, heart rate, and oxygen levels throughout the visit; monitoring and emergency equipment are standard parts of every sedation appointment.
For nitrous oxide appointments, the mask is placed and adjusted until your child reports feeling relaxed; the effects wear off quickly after the gas is stopped, allowing a short recovery period in the office. For oral sedation, a carefully measured medication is given, and the child remains supervised as the medication takes effect; parents should plan for a longer recovery time at home. If hospital-based general anesthesia is needed, we will coordinate care with the hospital team and provide a clear plan for pre-operative instructions, the hospital visit, and post-operative recovery. We will always discuss follow-up care and how to manage your child's comfort after the appointment.
Because we schedule extended appointment times, our team has room to move at your child's pace; we emphasize communication, patience, and stepwise desensitization when appropriate so future visits can become more comfortable.

RVA Children's Dentistry combines specialized pediatric training with a family-centered, low-volume practice model that emphasizes safety and individualized attention. Dr. Sobia Carter is a board-certified pediatric dentist with advanced fellowship and residency training, as well as extensive experience in sedation dentistry and hospital-based anesthesia. Dr. Jessica McAuliffe completed a Master's degree and specialty training in pediatric dentistry, with a particular focus on behavior guidance, pharmacologic management, and care for children with complex medical needs. Together, they lead a small, experienced clinical team that prioritizes extended visit times so children receive calm, attentive care rather than feeling rushed.
Our newly renovated office uses modern monitoring equipment and follows strict safety protocols for sedation. We discuss risks and benefits openly and recommend sedation only when clinically appropriate for the child's safety and overall experience. We also work with families on scheduling, insurance, and financing options so that treatment plans are realistic and supportive of each child's needs.
