Welcome!
At RVA Children's Dentistry, we believe a child's early dental experiences can shape the way they feel about dental care for years to come. Our goal is to provide high-quality pediatric dental care in a warm, welcoming environment where children feel respected, supported, and comfortable.
Our story
RVA Children's Dentistry began with a simple idea: to provide exceptional pediatric dental care in a warm, welcoming setting where families feel heard. The practice grew from Dr. Sobia Carter's long-standing devotion to children's oral health. Dr. Carter is a board-certified pediatric dentist with extensive specialty training and decades of experience caring for children with a wide range of needs. She built the practice around the belief that clinical excellence works best when combined with steady, reassuring care.
Dr. Jessica McAuliffe joined the team to expand our ability to serve more families while keeping the same personal touch. Dr. McAuliffe brings advanced specialty training and a focus on behavior guidance and care for children with complex medical or developmental needs. Together, Dr. Carter and Dr. McAuliffe lead the practice with shared values, making sure each child receives skilled care delivered with kindness.
Our philosophy
At the heart of our approach is the idea that dentistry is bigger than just a tooth; we treat the whole child. We prioritize patience and understanding, taking time to explain things to parents and children in plain language. Our team works to create a predictable, calming experience so kids can feel safe. We schedule extended appointment times when needed, so our clinical staff can connect with families and assess individual needs without rushing.
Prevention and gentle care guide most of what we do. Where possible, we use minimally invasive options to manage early cavities and protect enamel, while always choosing treatments that match a child's comfort level and development. When a child needs more advanced care, we focus on safety and compassionate preparation rather than quick fixes.
What makes us different
We are not a high-volume office. Our practice model is intentionally low-volume, which allows us to spend extra time with each family. This unhurried approach gives our team space to build trust with children, teach good oral habits, and create treatment plans that fit a child's unique behavior and health needs. The result is better cooperation, less fear, and stronger long-term habits.
Our care is led by two board-certified pediatric dental specialists who bring complementary strengths. Dr. Sobia Carter offers extensive experience in sedation dentistry and hospital-based care for children who require advanced support. Dr. Jessica McAuliffe focuses on behavior guidance, pharmacological management, and the treatment of children with special healthcare needs. Having both doctors available means families can access a wider range of pediatric expertise while still receiving care in one child-centered place.
We also invest in modern, comfort-centered tools and techniques. From digital x-rays that limit radiation exposure to minimally invasive treatments for early cavities, our clinical choices are made with both safety and the child's experience in mind. For children who benefit from distraction or sensory supports, we provide kid-friendly entertainment and noise-reducing headphones so visits feel less stressful.

How we support families during challenging moments
We know dental visits can cause worry, whether a child is very young, has sensory sensitivities, or needs extensive restorative treatment. Our team uses clear explanations, gentle behavior guidance, and flexible planning to help. When sedation or hospital-based general anesthesia is the safest option for extensive care, we explain the risks and benefits carefully and recommend these options only when they support the child's safety and well-being.
Parents are always partners in care. We take time to answer questions, walk through options, and help parents feel confident about decisions. Our scheduling practices, such as suggesting morning appointments for children who will need several procedures, are designed to match a child's natural energy so that visits go more smoothly.
Our community
RVA Children's Dentistry is proud to be part of the Glen Allen and Greater Richmond community. We welcome infants, children, adolescents, and children with special healthcare needs from neighborhoods across Henrico County and the Richmond area. Our office is designed to be warm and approachable, and we aim to be a neighborhood resource for families seeking reliable pediatric dental care.
We work with local specialists for services that fall outside our scope, so families always have clear next steps when advanced or adult-focused care is needed. We accept a range of insurance plans and offer options to help families without coverage, as accessibility is central to our mission to build healthy foundations for children across the community.
Our promise to your child
We promise to treat your child with kindness, to explain options clearly, and to move at a pace that builds confidence. Our goal is to build not only healthy teeth but also a positive first impression of healthcare that helps children grow into adults who care about their smiles. We aim to be a steady partner for families, offering clinical excellence wrapped in warmth and understanding.
